It began like most love stories do: with all-you-can-eat corned beef sandwiches on the Lower East Side. There was also kugel and honey bread and lox and schmears. After all, this story involves Alex.

It was our first date.  We had just met the day before, in the pouring rain, both of us rushing to hail the same cab.  Our eyes locked, and we knew it was meant to be.

Just kidding.  We met on a dating app, obviously.  Thanks to his superhuman powers and intuition, Mosh knew just where to take Alex: the Jewish Food Society’s annual festival. Can’t you just see him brainstorming?  “She’s Jewish… and her profile says she likes food… hmm.”

Unfortunately, this “food” festival came with a hefty side of speeches, way more than one wants to hear on a date (ideal number: zero).  FYI, the oral history of Katz’s deli is not short.

And though our inner producers should have been freaking out about accidentally hitting the lecture circuit on a first date, they weren’t.  We were too busy hitting it off.  We found a corner, far away from the Pastrami Retrospective, and started a marathon getting-to-know-you session that would last six hours.  We had so much in common.  Our careers, our love of news, a die-hard devotion to our families and a dogged mission to travel the world.  We could already see we lived by the same rules: work hard, be curious, and never ever say no to a dessert menu.

That first date eventually ended, but the conversation we started in the corner never has.  We carry it with us everywhere we go, whether it’s hanging out in New York with friends, or trekking the salt flats of Argentina.  We learn about and from each other, every day.  In Vermont, Alex taught Mosh how to put down his phone and ski.  In D.C., Mosh taught Alex more than she (or anyone) ever wanted to know about American history and political monuments.  And in Thailand, we both learned that, even if it’s dry season, you still might get hit by a once-in-a-century typhoon.

After nine months of dating, we moved in together.  Mosh swears it’s not because he always wanted a private chef, but his Seamless account has been suspiciously inactive ever since.  Alex was excited to have a live-in botanist, handyman, and walking search engine.

In March 2020, the pandemic sent us all inside.  We felt extremely blessed to have each other in those early months.  New York was scary.  The sirens, the empty shelves -- a constant reminder that we were living in the epicenter.  At the same time, it became clear that the two of us could do this.  Grocery shortages?  Not a problem for Alex.  Give her three ingredients and she’ll make it taste like 20.  Overwhelmed by news?  No one cuts through the noise quite like Mosh.  We started sharing information and recipes online, and as our projects grew bigger, we grew even closer.  It’s cheesy, but we’re cheesy and it’s true.

Central Park Proposal - 06.10.20

Central Park Proposal - 06.10.20

Things settled down in June -- and that’s when Mosh seized the moment.  He surprised Alex with a proposal in Central Park.  There was champagne and sushi, family and friends.  We used to take that for granted -- seeing the people we love, whenever we wanted.  We know better now.  And we can’t wait to see you all.

Our happily ever after started back in 2018, at that food festival.  But this summer, we make it officially official at Peconic Bay Yacht Club on the North Fork.  We promise lots of food, a fun town, a beautiful view, no typhoons, and just the right amount of speeches at the wedding.
